FREI RAUM

[~ transl. free space, (urban) open space, public space, scope for development, space for individual freedom]

2. Summer Studio at Shedhalle Tuebingen, Germany
from 17th to 30th of August 2014

plattform:[no budget] and Shedhalle Tuebingen – forum for contemporary arts – invite for the second time to the Summer Studio in Tuebingen.

After the successful two-week Summer Studio of 2011 on the subject of Gleich Zeit [Simultaneity, Concurrency, Equal Time] once again we will open the Shedhalle with its 1400sqm of indoor space as well as the surrounding area for the development and presentation of all kinds of ideas and projects dealing with the idea of FREI RAUM.

For this purpose we call all interested people to submit their project proposals and ideas for participation.

TOPIC

The origins of this year`s theme lie within the venue itself. Ever since its shutdown in 1998 the old slaughtery area has been a potentially free space for all kinds of artistic and cultural activities. While the previous Summer Studio was dealing with time and temporal aspects of artistic work, we intend to focus now on space and spatial topics. Central themes for us are the meaning and importance of free and open spaces, both in the context of individual artistic work and general social developments.

The following aspects of FREI RAUM can serve as an inspiration:

  • Free space can imply unoccupied or open space, and also free as in freedom - liberating - space

  • Not all open spaces are recognized and used as free spaces

  • How can free and open spaces be used in the literal sense?

  • Which factors limit and confine free spaces?

  • Where does personal free space end when it conflicts with the free space of other persons

  • What constitutes artistic, political and social free spaces?

  • Personal development and individual fulfillment

  • Freedom of interpretation versus.interpretational sovereignty

  • Places of refuge and self-reflection, free from social norms and preconceptions

  • Freedom in the choice of themes, materials and methods for artistic work, independence from conventions, fashions and restrictions in arts

  • Meaning and significance of art in public spaces, from street art, guerilla gardening, alternative social models to the opening, exploration and usage of free spaces in urban areas

  • Concurring existence of different free spaces, with its implications for overlaying social spaces

We also welcome projects and ideas on

  • Documentation of the Summer Studio

  • History of the slaughtery (historic video recordings are available)

  • Recycling and upcycling (e.g. in collaboration with the FabLab Tübingen), , projects about new forms of living and working

LOCATION

The Shedhalle is situated on the grounds of a former slaughtery near the university campus Wilhelmstrasse and is easy to reach from the old town of Tuebingen. The large and bright exhibition area can be used in various ways and can be divided in separate working areas using movable wall elements.

Tuebingen is one of the oldest university cities in Germany with its university founded in 1477. It is situated in the picturesque Neckar Valley, between the hills of the Swabian alb and the natural park Schoenbuch to the north. The historic old town is well preserved and dates back to the middle ages. The university with more than 28.000 students, many of them from countries all over the world, contributes greatly to the vibrant and diverse cultural life in the city.

Everyone who would like to deal with the subject of free space in an artistic, scientific or political way is more than welcome to submit proposals. All kinds of participating projects are welcome, ranging from a single presentation to two weeks of artistic work in the Shedhalle.
